Lee Ki Woo talks about Suicide!

Flower Boy Ramyun Shop‘ actor Lee Ki Woo was the next star to be interviewed on the topic of suicide for a suicide prevention campaign led by major Korean media outlets like TV Report and BNT News.
Titled ’A Beautiful Korea Living Together‘, the campaign aims to fill Korean society with love and hope, and has brought together the support of top stars to speak on the issue in hopes of bringing more attention to the cause.

Q. “What do you think about suicide? What do you think leads people to make such extreme decisions?”

“Everyone suffers from heartache. Unless you’ve gone through exactly what they are suffering from, you’ll never know how much pain they are suffering from. Still, suicide should never be an option. If you flip the world ‘suicide (ja sal)’, it becomes ‘to live (sal ja)’. When you go to the army, there are a lot of suicide prevention posters as well as training and lessons. I think listening to people that need help is one of the biggest ways to help the cause. If someone has at least one other person to hold on to and have their story heard, it could go a long way in preventing that person from thinking of ending their life.”

Q. “Was there ever a moment so difficult that you wanted to end your own life?”

“Ever since I was little, I saw my family overcome obstacles by coming together and fighting through it as a family. So even if I myself as an individual felt hardship, I never felt that I was alone. I can clearly see how much it would hurt my family if I were to give myself up that way.”
Q. “How do you overcome your obstacles?”
“I exercise, go out for drinks with my manager or close friends, and talk with my family.”

Q. “Do you know any celebrities on the brink of suicide?”

“I did see some, as well as some that just couldn’t come out of the ditch they had thrown themselves in. Whenever I see that, I’ll ask if we could go out for a meal and try to get them to think about their life in a different light. The rest is up to them.”
Q. “What will you be pursuing in the future?”

“I’m planning to take a break over the winter. I began working on a drama immediately after being discharged so I didn’t have a lot of freedom. I hope to go on vacation with some friends and train for my next drama. There are also Japanese promotions lined up starting January so I’ll also be studying up on the language.”

On top of that it includes a star-studded cast and cameos by some of the biggest icons in the local music industry.

[2011 Top 10 stories] 14-year marriage laid bare

The most shocking entertainment news of 2011 was the discovery of rock star Seo Taiji's secret marriage to actress Lee Ji-ah ("ATHENA", 2011) 14 years ago. The marriage became public after Lee filed a lawsuit for alimony and division of property in January.
Seo's fans felt betrayed as the 39-year-old has flatly denied speculation that he was married and joked that he's "married to music".
Lee demanded 5 billion won ($4.33 million) for division of property and 500 million won in alimony from Seo after they failed to reach a divorce settlement.
According to Lee's legal representative, the whole process caused Lee and the people around her so much pain after it became public that she dropped the suit. The two negotiated a settlement in July.
Before the marriage topped the entertainment headlines, Lee was spotted with actor Jeong Woo-seong in Paris in March. The two admitted to being lovers at the time.

[2011 Top 10 stories] Spotlight on indie films

The Korean film industry was more diverse than ever before. Amid an array of high-budget blockbuster films, a couple of Korean independent films achieved the10,000-audience mark, a figure compared to 1 million viewers for commercial films.
The rise of independent films started with "Re-encounter" in February. The title literally reflects the plot, as it centers on a young couple and their Re-encounter. In high school, a boy and girl fall in love, but the boy leaves her after the girl becomes pregnant.
Five years later, they meet again and look for their child who they believe has been adopted. Another coming-of-age film, "Bleak Night", in March also received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film stayed at the box office for about three months in a world where even blockbusters screen less than a month.
The film tells the story of three high school boys, attracting more than 20,000 viewers. "The Journals of Musan" joined the winning spree in April.
By spotlighting lives of North Korean defectors in the South, the film brought more than seven awards to newbie director Park Jung-bum in and outside of Korea. Other than these, the gay film "Miracle on Jongno Street", musical film "Play" and adult animation "King of Pigs" deserve to be dubbed indie films of this year. If you haven't seen them, just pick one. It will surely please you.

The year in film: 2011 brought large successes from low-budget movies

Of the many Korean films that were released this year, "Late Autumn - 2010", left, and independent film "Re-encounter" were chosen as impressive films of the year by critics. Provided by each distributor
It was another tough year for the film industry. According to the Korean Film Council, 136 Korean films and 278 foreign films were released as of late November, but just a few of them became box office hits and a handful of them were remembered by the audience. The most expensive film flopped, and the least-anticipated film became a sleeper hit of the year.

[2011 Top 10 stories] JTBC shows lead the pack

Although there are hundreds of cable TV channels, they broadcast specialized programs. Food TV airs shows related to food, and OCN shows relate to movies or TV series. To diversify, four new TV networks launched this month to offer general programming content. Before the launch, only three terrestrial broadcasters - KBS, MBC and SBS - offered general programming.
The new channels rose to the surface after 2009 legislation allowed industrial capital and newspaper organizations to enter the television sector. Among the new channels, JTBC is affiliated with the JoongAng Ilbo, TV Chosun with the Chosun Ilbo, Channel A with the Dong-a Ilbo and MBN with Maeil Business Newspaper
Two JTBC dramas - "Padam Padam... The Sound of His and Her Heartbeats", a love story about Jeong Woo-seong ("ATHENA", 2011) and Han Ji-min ("Detective K", 2011) - have gained the highest viewing rates, 2.151 percent, according to AGB Nielsen Media Research. No other channel's programs have broken the 2 percent mark.
Average viewing rates for all four channels are lower than 1 percent. Many worry the new channels will not take root in the competitive TV industry, but some say that it's too early to decide if the launch is successful.

[2011 Top 10 stories] Disabled are silent no more

A film called "Dogani" ("The Crucible"), based on a novel by Gong Ji-young, stirred up enormous outrage among Koreans this year. The film tells the true story of sexual abuse at a school in Gwangju. Teachers at Inhwa School allegedly raped hearing-impaired students. Over 4.5 million viewers saw the film, and even though the original case closed in 2006 with little media attention, public outcry both on and offline led to a new police investigation. Early in November, many of the young victims were also brought to Gangnam Severance Hospital in southern Seoul to get psychological treatment.
After some tests, six of the victims were diagnosed with serious post-traumatic disorders, according to the police.
Following the film, the central government raised the maximum jail sentence for criminals convicted of sexually assaulting disabled children from three years to five. The government also announced that criminals found to have sexually attacked any disabled people will wear electronic anklet monitors at all times.

K-Pop taking over the world? Don't make me laugh

K-Pop is great for Asia, but don't believe the hallyu hype about global domination. The world's biggest music markets simply don't care

Having followed the Korean media for some time, I’m all too familiar with the unrestrained embellishment of hallyu.
Every time I read an article raving about how successful the Wonder Girls are in the States, or how Rain is a “world star,” I can’t help but cringe.
Don’t get me wrong. I agree that K-Pop is being listened to outside of Korea and that it has an international fan base, but the media’s coverage of hallyu and K-Pop feel-gooderies is ridiculously one-sided.

Will they understand the lyrics?
Will Girls' Generation be hotter be Selena Gomez?
With the Korean pop sensations poised to "take over America" (or at least try to) we asked fans in the world's great consumer music market to preview the band's latest video, "The Boys."

Teens warned of plastic surgery risks

By Lee Hyo-sik

Around this time of the year, many female high-school seniors visit cosmetics surgery clinics in southern Seoul to improve their appearance before their transition into university the following spring.

Many university graduates also go under the knife during the three-month-long winter vacation, hoping that an improved look will help them find jobs and meet better partners in this increasingly appearance-oriented society.

But they should exercise a great deal of caution over possible post-operative side effects of plastic surgeries, the state-run consumer protection agency advised, saying clinics in the areas south of the Han River are the most frequent target of consumer complaints.
